I might be having a bit of a fangirl meltdown as I realize that two of my all time favorite Manga/Anime are being made into live action movies. Now if I can only pray them into the Portland theaters so I can watch them on the big screen life would be perfect. But even if I have to wait for them to be available online I am still in full fangirl mode.
For those of you who are not in the know, these upcoming movies are the equivalent of making a Star Wars or X-Men movie… and hopefully will be just as epic. I won’t go deep into the source material since we are considering doing some Anime posts in the upcoming future (and these shows will certainly be involved) but I wanted to share the teasers to help build the buzz. So without further ado.
** Gintama Synopsis:
The Amanto, aliens from outer space, have invaded Earth and taken over feudal Japan. As a result, a prohibition on swords has been established, and the samurai of Japan are treated with disregard as a consequence.
However one man, Gintoki Sakata, still possesses the heart of the samurai, although from his love of sweets and work as a yorozuya, one might not expect it. Accompanying him in his jack-of-all-trades line of work are Shinpachi Shimura, a boy with glasses and a strong heart, Kagura with her umbrella and seemingly bottomless stomach, as well as Sadaharu, their oversized pet dog. Of course, these odd jobs are not always simple, as they frequently have run-ins with the police, ragtag rebels, and assassins, oftentimes leading to humorous but unfortunate consequences.

** Fullmetal Alchemist Synopsis:
Edward Elric, a young, brilliant alchemist, has lost much in his twelve-year life: when he and his brother Alphonse try to resurrect their dead mother through the forbidden act of human transmutation, Edward loses his brother as well as two of his limbs. With his supreme alchemy skills, Edward binds Alphonse’s soul to a large suit of armor.
A year later, Edward, now promoted to the fullmetal alchemist of the state, embarks on a journey with his younger brother to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone. The fabled mythical object is rumored to be capable of amplifying an alchemist’s abilities by leaps and bounds, thus allowing them to override the fundamental law of alchemy: to gain something, an alchemist must sacrifice something of equal value. Edward hopes to draw into the military’s resources to find the fabled stone and restore his and Alphonse’s bodies to normal. However, the Elric brothers soon discover that there is more to the legendary stone than meets the eye, as they are led to the epicenter of a far darker battle than they could have ever imagined.

Both movies come out this summer and you can easily find both anime streaming online. I highly suggest going and checking them out for some well written entertainment.
**My Drama List
Out of the two I think i’m more curious to see the Fullmetal Alchamist one. 🙂
im always scared whenever there’s a live adaptation from good anime series – scared that the movie wont live up the expectation and made me cringe in regret , if that’s possible especially if they are established animes.. example – live action Dragonball and Honey&Clover were reaaaaly bad, Rurounin Kenshin movies were okay but i prefer re-watching the anime any day, BECK didnt live up the cool band feel anime gave me, NANA was okay but not great.. maybe 2 hours to short to cramp a season (or seasons)..
but the FMA trailer do look cool..
One of the things i do appreciate about these type of movies (even if the don’t hold up to the original) is their ability to being new viewers to Asian movies and dramas. It is how i got hooked switching from an anime to a movie then to a drama. I think a lot of people drift into the asian culture this way and i always support that.
I have hopes not high hopes but hopes just the same. They did a good job with Kenshin so maybe they’ll do these two wonderful manga/anime justice. Fingers crossed.
OMG OMG OMG Gintoki OMG I’m so thrilled about this!!!! & the cast really looks wonderful! I just cannot wait!
Full Metal Alchemist looks interesting, but OMG Gintama is pretty much my fav anime ever so total fangirl squeeing here….

Wow! I knew nothing about the adaptation of FMA!! 😀 The trailer gave the chills. It looks true to the anime atmosphere. Now I am super-scared about their choice of actor for Edward. Will he be as awesome as I remember from the anime?
I can’t help but feel excited. “Touka koukan”, I hope they can bring the magic of the anime story to life 😀
