The Fangirl’s Drama Roundtable: A Plethora of Drama Teasers

.;a1a.pngSince I have been working a lot lately I have not been able to do my usual teaser posts.  So what better way to catch our readers up than with one huge teaserpalooza and to make it extra special, I am dragging the rest of the Fangirls along to add to the fun.

Suspicious Partner

*SYNOPSIS: Noh Ji Wook is a prosecutor in the Central District Prosecutors’ Office who ends up switching professions to a private attorney. He harbors a trauma stemming from an event in his childhood involving his parents and his first love. Eun Bong Hee, a Taekwondo athlete in her youth, is a prosecutor trainee who has become a murder suspect. Due to a murderer’s amnesia, Eun Bong Hee and Noh Ji Wook both find themselves being his target.

KMUSE: I am a big fan of both Ji Chang Wook and Nam Ji Hyun so I am having high hopes for this drama.  Especially since it has been a while since I have seen Ji Chang Wook in a romantic comedy.

Dramarookie: So confused! I knew next to nothing about this drama, but the vibrant musical teaser appealed to me. Then I read words like trauma, murder, and amnesia in the synopsis. Is this false advertising to reel in viewers like me who prefer a lighter touch? Or are they looking at the optimistic, funny side of memory loss and homicide?

CLKYTTA: I’m not sure what to think either Dramarookie…. This could be great or it could be another The K2, which I did not like at all.  I’m hoping they are just trying to snare our attention and that there is a solid plot line.  I’ll probably wait to watch this one after I hear from my fellow fangirls.

CLSunbae: Dramarookie — you legit made me laugh out loud. Maybe this drama will do the same. I love me some Ji Chang Wook but man, the K2 was a bad drama (naked shower fight scenes aside), so I really need this to be good to redeem him. I am also confused about how the previews mesh with the description but I also kind of don’t care. The previews were silly and charming, which is totally my style so like KMUSE, I have high hopes.

KdramaJen: I loved the teaser, so I sincerely hope I am not disappointed.  I love Ji Chang Wook, but I could not finish The K2.  I watched through the awesome shower fight scene, but even though he drew my eye, I just didn’t feel the chemistry.  I am totally on board with giving this one a try, though. I am really hoping the tone is similar to the trailer, but if they throw in some cute kitties and a fan service shower scene, then I might be able to deal with amnesia and murder.  This is on my “To Watch” list.

Drama Geek: If you put the first teaser in context it’s not that weird. The marketing team is capitalizing on the fact that this show premiers right when the election for South Korea’s new president is being held. So they had the cast go out, campaign style, and film this out among the people. I love everything about it from the hot pink bow tie, to Nam Ji Hyun’s adorable dancing. The second teaser made me laugh because Chang Wook said he didn’t want to do action after K2 and now his leading lady is the one who gets to kick butt. I’m really looking forward to this one.

Fight My Way

*SYNOPSIS: Drama tells the story of Ko Dong Man and Choi Ae Ra. In their school days, Ko Dong Man took part in taekwondo. Now, he makes a living by working as a contract employee and also goes after the UFC title. Choi Ae Ra hoped to become an announcer, but she gave up her dream. Now, she works at the information desk of a department store.

KMUSE: I had forgotten that this drama was an actual thing until this teaser popped up.  So far I am totally on board because these two look adorable fighting.  I guess it will all depend on whether the script is as cute as their chemistry for me.

Dramarookie: Not much information to go on about the story. But the heroine headlocks the male lead, and he bites her in return. I’m all about the petty bickering storylines.

CLKYTTA:I’ve been keeping my eye on this one. I’m really looking forward to it because I feel like the OTP is well matched and they appear to have good chemistry.  I like a good bickering storyline too.

CLSunbae: I like both these actors. That synopsis tells me nothing about the story, but the teaser was cute. I don’t know how they managed to make the fight scene have sexual tension, but it did. I love Park Seo Joon but I haven’t loved him as a lead (She Was Pretty, Hwarang) so hopefully this one is the game changer for him.

KdramaJen: We are a Taekwondo family, so this is definitely on my list too.  Park Seo Joon has great potential as an actor.  I haven’t loved him in his last two, but I think he may still rise to the occasion.  I plan to watch this one!

Drama Geek: Please drama gods let this pairing be as spectacular as it appears it can be. I have fervently disliked his last two pairings and have had to go back and watch clips from Witch’s Romance to prove to myself that he can be part of a smoking OTP. I also love friends to lovers stories, so I’m looking forward to the story too.

Circle

*SYNOPSIS: Taking place in both the present year 2017 and in the year 2037, when people believe that their future depends on humans controlling and regulating their emotions, this drama is a sci-fi mystery. When alien visitors arrive on Earth, humans learn new skills from them and take advantage of them; what ensues is a story of alliance, resistance, and love.
Each episode will contain two shorter stories, the first part set in 2017 and called “Beta Project,” with the second set in 2037 and called “Grand New World.”

KMUSE: This drama is crazy ambitious and a huge departure from the regular kdrama tropes/genres.  I am praying to the kdrama gods that things go well and this chance leads to further creative scriptwriting.

Dramarookie: Definitely a different vibe going on. I admit that multiple timelines aren’t my thing. (And yet I was a big fan of Dr. Who in the Tennant/Smith years.) I guess it depends on the mood I’m in when it airs.

CLKYTTA: I’m cautiously on board for this one.  I think the premise is good and they seem to have a good cast.  I just need the writing to be solid.

CLSunbae: So real talk here. It’s hard enough reading subtitles while watching a drama. I find the more complicated the storyline, the more quickly I get lost (it also doesn’t help that I’m a lot dumber since having kids). I got confused just reading the synopsis so I’ll probably pass on this unless it gets consistent raves from my Kdrama besties (and they can explain the gist of the plot so I’m not doing a big “HUH!?” the whole time).

KdramaJen: I am undecided on this one.  I will probably also wait to see what the other fan girls have to say before I decide to watch.  It sounds interesting and if executed well it could be epic.  It’s the IF that has me wondering if it will be worth my time to watch…

Drama Geek: The premise is right up my alley. Just like Kmuse, I  feel like this might be a little ambitious for a live shoot drama in Korea. But they’ve managed to pull off a few like Signal or Joseon X-Files that also felt a bit out of their wheelhouse. I am tentatively optimistic.

Forest of Secrets

*SYNOPSIS: Hwang Shi Mok had brain surgery when he was a child, which caused him to lack emotion. Now, Hwang Shi Mok works as a prosecutor. He is rational, but cold and lonely. He is also one of the only prosecutors not involved in corruption. One day, a dead body is thrown in front of him. He meets Police Lieutenant Han Yeo Jin at a murder crime scene. They work together to eradicate corruption at the prosecutor’s office and solve a serial murder case.

CLKYTTA:I’m not sure if this is going to be another Beautiful Mind type story, but I’m intrigued.  I’ll be adding this to my list.

CLSunbae: Ah, the good old “I’m dead inside” trope. Not my favorite for a leading man, to be honest. I like the “I’m so passionate I’m about to boil over” type better (see: every Eric Mun drama ever). So I’ll probably pass on this one.

KMUSE: GASP!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I love this actor so much.  He made Gods Gift 14 Days for me and I have been impatiently waiting for him to be back on my tv screen.  This is a must watch just due to the quality of leads.

KdramaJen: This is another I am not sure about.  I will wait and see what others have to say.  It works out better for me because then I can have a marathon if others say it is a must-see.

Drama Geek: Holy Match Made in Heaven. Guys, I love Doona Bae to pieces. I really would watch anything she’s in. But to match her with my God’s Gift guy makes me want to poop chocolate bunnies. And if anyone can make the dead inside trope work for me it’s him. I am crossing my fingers we will get a twisty murder mystery and SMART COPS. Let my life will be complete.

Ruler: Master of the Mask

*SYNOPSIS: In the 1700’s, Crown Prince Lee Sun fights against Pyunsoo Hwe, an organization that has accumulated power and wealth through privatizing water all over Joseon. He becomes a hope for the people who suffer. Ga-Eun is the woman Crown Prince Lee Sun loves and she helps him grow as a ruler.

KMUSE: I laugh every time I read this synopsis because the teasers are so much better than the bland plot suggests.  I am totally, 100% on board due to the awesome cast and (hopefully) well-done writing.

Dramarookie: Saeguk, so . . . NO. I totally respect the people that love this genre, but I haven’t seen one yet that I liked. (I’m not counting fusion dramas like Splish Splash Love or Queen Inhyun’s Man.) I would have to hear amazing, mind-blowing things about it to even give it a chance.

CLKYTTA: I’m really interested in this one.  The teasers look absolutely awesome.  Plus this cast is one that I can usually depend on to choose good projects.

CLSunbae: This is a yes for me because my son (10 years old) saw the preview and was like, “Mom! Mom! Can we watch it!?” He loves the saeguks with lots of intrigue. And there’s nothing I love better than watching a Kdrama with my kids. (Semi-related sidenote: I just got back from taking them to the Disney store. I let them each pick a Disney character barbie because they were on sale and my two oldest picked Mulan and Li Shang. They’ve never even seen Mulan; they just liked that they were Asian. My son said Li Shang looked like Hong Gil Dong.) Drama Geek: I my gosh, I think I need a Li Shang doll. 🙂

KdramaJen: Oh!  This is a total YES for me.  I love Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun.  I have wanted to see them in something together for a while.  I am 100% on board and even if the plot falls flat, I may be satisfied anyway because of all the pretty!  So, I am all in on this one!

Drama Geek: Again, a perfect OTP pairing. They are both fantastic in sagueks. I actually think Kim So Hyun was a queen in her past life. Every teaser is more and more intense. There will be tears to be had, but also hot boys in hanbok so there is a tradeoff. And hopefully a female lead who is part of the central story and gets to save the nation or something awesome like that.

This concludes our bevy of teasers.  Which dramas do you plan to check out?  Let us know in the comments and check back soon for more great drama chatting.

Til next time,

The Fangirls

  1. “optimistic, funny side of memory loss and homicide” – sounds about right. After all everyone knows that, apart from terminal cancer, NOTHING is as comically romantic as murder and memory loss.

  2. Well – looks like I’ve got MY plate full! Circle – I’m a SF geek & this is looking fab – real SF & not just time travel (which I have to say SK does really really well). Also JCW (I still don’t get all the hate for K2, sorry – it was fairly well-received but you’d never know it from so many of the commenters LOL) Bae Doo Na is one of my fav actresses (not just Asian BTW) so yayyy! None of these turns me off. Who knows what will happen when I start watching, tho?

  3. Going by what we see in k-dramas, I am never having brain surgery in Korea. Just FYI-ing y’all now!
