The Plot:

Kmuse: Well……..there were explosions, and a hot chinese ex-military drifter fighting against evil oppressors in Africa….  did I already mention the explosions?  I can’t remember another film that had so many action scenes all combined together to create one action packed extravaganza of violence.  Not horrible per se, but I sure could have used a tiny bit more plot mixed in.  As it was, most of the plot the film did have either happened in Wolf Warrior 1 (I assume) or in the last thirty minutes where we finally learned about why the bad guys wanted the African daughter of a Chinese doctor.  I guess the writers figured actual plot would get in the way of their knife, gun, & tank fights.  Can’t have that happening.

CLKYTTA: Hmm. Plot, plot, what was the plot? There was a lot of Chuck Norris/Sylvester Stallone style warzone fighting and a few steamy glances between our leading man and woman, but plotwise, this left us  with not much plotwise to go on for the longest time.

Cinematography:

Kmuse: Despite its total lack of deep plot points, I do have to admit that the action sequences are really well done.  Would it mean more if 90% of the movie wasn’t action packed…..possibly.  But if all you are interested in is well done action than this is the movie for you.

CLKYTTA: The action sequences were pretty intense.  The filming was done in a way that you felt like you were right in the middle of all of it.  It reminded me of those gamesystem war games that the guys in my family play, but with better CGI.  I do have to mention that this was so action packed that they even had to escape from a lion!

Random Character Observations:

Kmuse: Were there really any other character’s that mattered beyond our hero and the occasional bad guy he was currently killing?  Not really.  The girl was mediocre and inserted just to have a girl.  The only other character’s that stood out was his godson and his mother.  Those two had a few seconds here and there of humor which was appreciated.  But then it just switched back to the fighting.

CLKYTTA: I have to say that I only became interested and invested when Zhang Han showed up on the screen.  Yes, I’m shallow and I loved him in Boss & Me/Shan Shan Comes to Eat, so I may have paused a few times to admire his smile and wish this were a rom com instead of an action movie. I also loved the godson and his mom, I knew that as headstrong as the boy was, Mama was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

Overall Review:

Kmuse: I am a huge fan of substance over visual.  If there is no plot than all the cool action sequences in the world isn’t going to make me love it.  Not to mention that there was so much action that I started to get a little bored.  I found myself, at one point, trying to decide if they sound editor used just one gunshot sound effect for the whole show, or mixed things up a little.  Maybe one gun being shot into a watermelon and one into a cantaloupe to indicate exploding heads?  With such a huge body count, this drama has to have used some variety right?

CLKYTTA: I actually fast forwarded through some parts because all the fight scenes started looking the same to me. I’m not a big fan of pure action movies, I need there to be a decent plot and honestly, this movie was pretty plot deficient. I’m obviously not the intended market for this movie as I would have liked to see our leading guy and lady kick butt together and there to be more romance than blood and bullets.

See you next time,

The Fangirls
