A Web Drama Review: Last Minute Romance

Since I’m a full-time student and I’m behind on almost all the major dramas everyone is watching; I have decided to watch all the fun web and mini-dramas out right now.  These shows are great time fillers when you are waiting for a new episode of an on-air drama to come out, or if you are like me and want to watch, but don’t have a lot of time.

Last Minute Romance showed up in my recommendations and I was pretty sure it was going to be one of those dramas that is predictable and full of drama tropes. I’m ok with predictable so I sat down with my Christmas cookies and cocoa and prepared to while away a couple of hours. Watch out because there are a few spoilers ahead!

The premise of the story is that Baek Sae, a Life Line operator, has a terminal illness and wishes to date someone who looks like her celebrity crush. Enter Yoon Dong Joon, who’s almost identical to Ji Seol Woo, Baek Sae’s crush.  Here’s the kicker, Yoon Dong Joon is a struggling actor who hates that he resembles Ji Seol Woo.  Baek Sae hires Yoon Dong Joon to be her “fake” Ji Seol Woo so she can complete her bucket list.

Now toss all your predictions out the window right now, because even though this drama has every trope in the book, it really surprised me because it didn’t always follow the formula I thought it would. Part of their dates includes acting out scenes to famous dramas and I seriously laughed so hard I almost choked on my cocoa during the Descendants of the Sun parody. Then it totally switched gears on me and surprised me. Instead of being morbid and sad, this drama manages to be honest and uplifting.  While not everything turned out how I wished it would, I liked the way this drama ended.

I would have liked this drama to be longer, mainly because I really enjoyed the chemistry between the two leads. I’m also a sucker for dramas that have a good friend storyline and I loved Baek Sae’s monk friend. We all need a friend who will be by our side during the hardest times in life.

Note: With losing Jonghyun recently, and as someone who has experienced a tragic loss, the theme of suicide and depression support in this drama really resonated with me. If you are struggling with depression or having suicidal thoughts, there are people who care. https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org

  1. I watched this one and Somehow18 back to back. This one is not bad but I was suprised how good Somehow18 is! I thought it would be depressing and too serious kind. I am glad I watched it.
