The Fangirls have started watching the fluffy Chinese drama Sweet Dreams (One Thousand and One Nights).  Come find out if Dilmurat Dilraba can keep our interest as a cute flower obsessed stalker in our latest edition of First Impressions and Unfiltered Thoughts.

Synopsis: Ling Ling Qi (A play on 007) is a sincere, kind girl who’s always happy to lend a hand to others, but she also has low self-esteem, which has severely impacted her life, making her unable to do her best at work and fulfill her dreams. She’s also afraid to express her feelings for her colleague that she’s been harboring a crush on, Bo Hai. One day, Ling Ling Qi and BoHai take part in a company’s high tech experimental bracelet test to improve sleeping patterns. During the test, the bracelet malfunctions, leading Ling Ling Qi’s electro brain waves to be keyed into Bo Hai’s dream sequence, which allowed Ling Ling Qi to enter Bo Hai’s dreams. Drama focuses on how the two characters help each other fix their own personal problems within their dreams and real lives. (MyDramaList)

The plot:

Kmuse: I was somewhat hesitant when beginning Sweet Dreams. The concept of two people sharing their thoughts/dreams via technology is a stretch for me. However, at least so far, the drama has totally exceeded my expectations. Sure, you can’t focus too hard on the logistics of the story, but the cute factor is totally winning me over.

Clkytta: Get me some crackers cause this is the good kind of cheese! I love the whole idea of shared dreams and this story does it in the cutest way possible. I also like that it’s centered around a real business and they stay with the whole running a business storyline.

Dream sharing, do we buy it as a way to fall in love?

Kmuse: I mentioned above that I am not totally on board with this concept. It feels a bit too unrealistic for the world they are portraying. Also, what happens if your dream sharing soulmate is a guy named Bubba who is living in his mom’s basement? That puts a whole different spin on this whole situation. I also am a little bit worried that Ling Ling Qi knows that she is sharing a dreamscape while BoHai remains oblivious. It makes the dynamic off kilter a bit and I don’t like that she is playing with his mind that way. I suspect that will come into play in the future, or at least I hope so since I am not a fan of a relationship being so one-sided.

Clkytta: I choose to live in a fantasyland where there are no Bubbas in basements, just undiscovered princes who need rescuing.  I think it’s interesting that she knows it’s him, but he can’t remember her. I agree with Kmuse, this will become an issue later on.

Leading lady is crazy cute….in a stalker way

Kmuse: I can’t believe I am saying this but Dilmurat Dilraba’s ability to be cute is overshadowing her stalker personality in this drama. This is one of those situations that in real life is an example of unhealthy behavior. But when I am watching the drama I find myself cheering Ling Ling Qi on in her quest to discover her flower hottie destiny.

Clkytta: Dilmurat Dilraba was adorable as the little fox princess in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, and I’m so glad that cuteness has carried over to this show. Her happiness and hopes are infectious. You want him to see her and fall for her, even when she’s tripping over her own two feet!

Is our leading man a bit too much a damsel in distress?

Kmuse: The biggest complaint I have so far is that BoHai (Deng Lun) is a tad bit boring. He doesn’t stand out to me and really could be replaced by various other actors and I would not be disappointed. Not to mention that so far he has been very much the damsel in distress in the dream world. I can’t decide if I like this twist or not.

Clkytta: I’m further into the drama than the other fangirls and I think his character is just slow to develop. He’s got some trauma to overcome and that makes him a little more interesting in the future episodes. He’s also a lot more calculating in their real world than he is in the dream world.

Where do we want this to go?

Kmuse: I personally want BoHai to figure out what is going on in his dreams and change the dynamic a bit. I really like Ling Ling Qi but she needs to learn that messing with a person because you think you love him is not OK. Not to mention I think it would add a funny twist to the story that will keep me interested for the long term.

Clkytta: I want him to see her for the talented woman she is. She’s been overlooked as a silly fangirl, but she’s got talent in flower arranging and she could be a real asset to the business. I also want him to be more interactive in the dream world. I’d like to see him control some of the dream instead of being so passive.

Will we keep watching?

Kmuse: My schedule is so full of dramas that I am currently loving.  I think I cursed myself when I wrote that post on what to do during drama drought because now I only have good dramas to choose from.  I suspect I will continue watching this drama but it will be a filler show.  There is no way I can keep up with the heavy daily schedule when I am also watching Legend of Fuyao for our chatty recaps.

Clkytta: It’s cute and fluffy and I’m enjoying it. Like Kmuse said, it’s a good filler drama. It’s not going down as one of my all time favorites, but it’s an enjoyable way to pass the time right now.
