4 Reasons you should be watching Chinese drama The Legends

The Fangirls just started the Chinese drama The Legends and are 100% on board for fantasy filled fun and romance. Come let us try to convince you to join since fangirling is more fun with friends.

Lu Zhao Yao Kicks Butt

Kmuse: I have often stated that the women in Chinese dramas are some of the strongest and best written female characters in Asian entertainment. Zhao Yao is a prime example. She sees something she wants and she works hard to achieve her goals without leaning on the men in her life. I also love how they flipped the damsel in distress trope to where she is saving our leading man. It really works for me and I love the progress of their relationship arc so far.

Drama Geek: Her character is interesting to me. She’s been secluded her entire life, and only had interactions with her family. When she does go out into the world, she knows she’s powerful and doesn’t cower in front of people but just does what she thinks is right.

Kdrama Jen: I love bad-donkey female leads who don’t need to be rescued and are not afraid to show their strength!  I also love how she challenges the whole concept of good vs. evil.  This character has my attention!

Gorgeous Fighting Choreography

Kmuse: This is the first I have ever seen a fight using a zither. It made me chuckle more than once. I have noticed that in the majority of the fights there are small unique props that set them apart from what I see in other dramas. Whether it is a zither or candied fruit, each scene has been memorable so far.

Drama Geek: I have been dying for a female lead fighter like in Legend of Fuyao, and right now this is the main reason I’m watching this drama. She is confident and powerful when she fights and the scenes are pretty fun to watch.

Kdrama Jen: Fuyao gave us scorpion balls, and now Legends is providing zither and candied fruit fights.  I love a good fight scene, so I am fully entertained.

Attractive, in Personality and Looks, Leading Man

Kmuse: Xu Kai (the actor that plays Mo Qing) caught my attention as the sexy brother to the empress in Story of Yanxi Palace. Now that I am seeing him as the romantic lead I am 100% a fan. Not only does he have the looks that would make an idol boy cry, but his ability to emote puppy love has me swooning.

Drama Geek: I am mesmerized by his eyes and I like the fact that he’s the smitten one and she’s kind of clueless to his feelings.

Kdrama Jen: We are planning to podcap this drama, and I can tell you right now that I will have plenty to say about those EYES!  They make me all swoony!  I was completely mesmerized by this actor in Yanxi Palace, so to have him as the LEAD means so many more opportunities to just enjoy his longing glances.

Great Storytelling

Kmuse: When it comes down to it, no amount of hot leads or great fighting scenes is going to make up for a good story. For me, the plot is the most important aspect when it comes to me completing a show. Thankfully, so far, The Legends has this in spades. While the whole supposed good sect vs demon sect trope has been done to bits, these two characters transcend the story premise to make me care. I look forward to seeing what comes next.

Drama Geek: I’m interested in the story so far, and if they keep sprinkling in the amazing fight scenes, then I’m likely to make it to at least the halfway point. LOL. Sorry, my Cdrama track record is not good.

Kdrama Jen: I have the very bad habit of not being able to resist binge watching if episodes are available, so I just want to say that the story has kept pulling me along.  I might be more willing to overlook plot in favor of pretty, but I certainly prefer a compelling storyline.  I am hooked!

So why don’t you come and join us in this fun drama adventure. We would love to chat along with you all as we watch . We will also be doing a podcap project with this drama. Check out our podcast as we chat in detail about The Legends.

  1. I’m really looking forward to this one. I’d had the novel on my watch list for a long time, but the translation was stalled (someone’s picked it up again since the drama started, but it’s still only about 1/4 finished).

The novel author is one of my favourites. She does bittersweet storylines very well, lots of poignancy, but her romances generally follow Western conventions and give us an OTP happy ending. For me it’s a perfect blend of the Chinese tendency towards tragic romance and my personal preference for happy romance. Her stories often unfold over multiple lifetimes; the first novel of hers that I read was “Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes all Thanks to a Single Moment of Impulse,” which I picked because of the title and really liked 😀 (find it here: https://www.novelupdates.com/series/seven-unfortunate-lifetimes-all-thanks-to-a-single-moment-of-impulse/

  2. Finally all of you started on The Legends~ I truly enjoyed your previous podcast for Ever Night, can’t wait for The Legends’s. Going for another ride.

Not only will Xu Kai’s eyes be stealing your heart, his voice for his character Mo Qing/ Li Chen Lan will as well.

    • I can’t wait to get started! I have watched as many episodes as Kmuse will let me get away with! Seems like we will be replacing “Hot Evil Bad Guy” with “Hottie Eyes” this time!

    • *Correction Mo Qing/Li Chen Lan was voice-over by voice actor Yang Tianxiang (who does voice over for dramas like Mystic Nine, Princess Agents, Ashes of Love and many more. But his voice in The Legends is simply just 😍
