Top 5 Kpop MVs: All the Melancholy

For a lot of people, January is gray and gloomy. The holidays are over, but it’s still a few months before the weather warms up and sunshine enters the picture. Unless, of course, you’re in the southern hemisphere and finding yourself bemused by all these melancholy songs coming out at the beginning of the year! Wherever you are – in life, on the planet, or emotionally – these MVs are sure to tug at your heartstrings.

Mark Tuan – “My Life”

GOT7 is moving confidently forward in their new musical direction, and the solo efforts from the members reflect that. This heartbreaking song from Mark Tuan is wistful and full of melancholy, but the MV is visually arresting and I LOVE IT.

Jackson Wang – “王嘉尔 JACKSON WANG”

But seriously, who hurt these boys?? (Yes, I know we already know that. ANYway.) This MV from GOT7’s Jackson Wang is a whole mood, and I can just feel that lonely walk down the street at dusk. I can’t even begin to imagine living in two worlds the way he does (or three, if you throw in the life of a kpop idol too), but I’m glad he’s open about his struggles.

Taeyeon – “Can’t Control Myself”

I’ve loved Taeyeon’s voice since I heard her solo in Amber Liu’s “Shake That Brass.” She spins the evocative melody into a beautiful musical experience that feels like she’s baring her soul. THe MV is full of lush details and a heartbreaking story.

HyunJun Hur – “Let Me Drown”

Formerly of The Boyz as Hwall, HyunJun Hur has gone solo. “Let Me Drown” beautifully showcases what makes him a solid artist – a light, strong voice, smooth choreography, and an attention to detail that draws my eyes to the MV and won’t let me look away. I’m loving the contrast between his wardrobe and his backup dancers, and how it shows they both have a place!

ENHYPEN – “Blessed-Cursed”

It’s lovely to see Enhypen come into their own as they finish this comeback cycle (I think it’s concluding?). “Blessed-Cursed” is confident and visually intriguing, even as it’s less intense and more reflective.
