My rock-lovin’ heart is ABSOLUTELY delighted with FTIsland’s newest album drop. From the growly “Burn It” to the reflective tones in “Letter to Myself” and “T.I.V.” and “Reason”, it feels like FTIsland is hitting new heights in a refreshing new era. Come join me for my first impressions of the Serious album!
“Letter to Myself”
There is something sweetly poignant about this song. The longing absolutely echoes through Lee Hong Gi’s voice, and I really ought to look up the lyrics, because it’s speaking to my soul.
“Burn It”
Impossible to have a first impression of this song, as it was pre-released a few weeks ago. I immediately got lost in the gritty feeling, happy to be living a K-rock world.
“Serious”
Walking until I die…yeah, that tends to stick in my head. The follow up Why so serious? is definitely telling a story here. I love this dark rock ballad, and the lyrics are next on my list to look up.
“AQUA”
This is a POP rock song, and I appreciate the shift in tone. It’s very reminiscent of FTIsland’s earlier hits, and Hong Gi’s gritty tone keeps it grounded while Jaejin and Minhwan’s voices round out the chorus.
“Sunrise Yellow”
I’ve loved this peppy song since its first release in Japanese, and I am DELIGHTED that it’s been included on this album.
“T.I.V. (Tears in Vain)”
The sound of “T.I.V.” echoes “AQUA”, but it’s definitely more serious (Ha! No pun intended.).
“INFERNO”
The dark choral tones that kick off “INFERNO” are a preview of delightfully emo things to come, and I am here for it.
“My Birthday”
I played this one for my daughter as we went to pick up her birthday donuts, expecting something happy. NOPE. Hello to yet another well-disguised breakup song. After we made the realization, we laughed at the irony and enjoyed the experience.
“Journey”
Did I sit in the car to finish this song? You betcha! I love FTIsland’s range, and inspirational anthems are one of their specialties. “Journey” is no exception.
“Reason”
This reflective ballad is the perfect ending for an album that’s embraced a wide range of emotions. The vocals are on point, the guitar work is full of heart, and everything about it makes me feel like I’ve been on the best kind of journey and now I’ve come home.
I love FTIsland for their persistence and endurance, even though the “five treasures” are now three. I feel like their post-military releases have been so strong and so full of experience that it’s impossible to ignore their efforts. How about you, music fans? Did you enjoy the Serious album?
