First Impressions and Unfiltered Thoughts: My Mister

Gather ’round, y’all, and I’ll tell you a little tale from grad school. As I was earning my master’s degree in English, I had to read many, many books that people thought were the best form of art. Some were great — excellent characters, good humor, moments of lightness, and a well-resolved ending. Some, often extolled as high art or literary fiction, were about the worst of people making the worst of choices and brooding about it for pages in lyrically moody settings.

First Impressions: Mother

Next up on the First Impressions list is Lee Bo Young’s new drama Mother. This show is a remake of a 2010 Japanese drama by the same name.

Here is a quick synopsis of the premise. Soo Jin (Lee Bo Young) takes a temporary job as a teacher and happens upon a student Hye Na (Heo Yool) who at first glance looks to be a bit unkempt, but once Soo Jin digs deeper into the girl’s home life finds that she’s being abused. After the system seems to fail the little girl, Soo Jin kidnaps her and becomes her mother. Continue reading

First Impressions and Unfiltered Thoughts: Todome no Kiss (Kiss That Kills)

Japanese dramas are usually not on my radar as much as Chinese or Korean. But every now and then something just catches my eye and I have to give it a try. OK, I’ll admit that I am watching this because the leading man looks really really hot in this poster. Luckily, the drama turned out to be top notch and I can’t get enough of Todome no Kiss.
