First Impression: Now, We Are Breaking Up

2021 is drawing to a close and, as you know, dramaland likes to throw a lot of romances our way just in time for the holidays. The writer of Misty has brought in the star power — our two leads look stunning together in Now, We Are Breaking Up. If you’re in the mood for a mature and steamy romance, look no further.

If WWW met Encounter and had a baby, it would probably look a lot like Song Hye Kyo and Jang Ki Yong steaming up the screen during their opening scene. The show just gets right to the good parts — these lovers hook up first and ask questions later. Except what good OTP meets once and then never sees each other again?

Hotness x Two

Ha Young Eun (Song Hye Kyo) is a hard-working fashion designer and she looks the part. She is dressed to perfection, embodying the stunning creature we’ve grown to love in Hye Kyo’s characters. She’s good at her job, even the parts where she has to run around chasing hot models out of hotel rooms. Yes, there are lots of abs in the first episode and they don’t all belong to our lead.

Yoon Jae Gook (Jang Ki Yong) is an in-demand photographer, but he goes by a lot of nicknames so most people don’t know who he really is. He’s young and talented and has lots of mommy issues. He doesn’t seem interested in ever getting married and was fine with their encounter being one night. That is, until he runs into her in the elevator with a hot model and thinks she might be in a relationship of her own.

Love of Fashion & Beautiful People

Both of our leads are deeply immersed in the fashion industry and there is a lot fashion love from Young Eun. I personally wear a hoodie, jeans, and a beanie most of the year, but I love watching someone who is passionate about what they do. I’m sure that, just like other parts of Korean entertainment, the fashion world isn’t really as big as it looks. Everyone has connections to each other and that brings our one-nighters into each other’s sphere. There’s a cool photoshoot that Jae Gook gets guilted into helping with, a fashion show that follows, and lots of drama around who is going to wear their beautiful clothes. All of this happens while we get to know all the main characters. It’s a show full of attractive people wearing stylish clothes.

Family Drama

You can’t have rich people without pesky moms and dads included in the package. Yoon Jae Gook is from a well-off family that has a lot of tragedy in their past. He is very distant from his mom and is tricked into the blind date she arranges with a chaebol daughter. Said daughter happens to be one of Young Eun’s difficult coworkers. Her drunken state makes her not fit to attend, so Young Eun goes in her place. She’s famished and very busy and doesn’t seem to recognize her one-night stand partner. Not the case for Yoon Jae Gook. He humors her prickly ways during the dinner and tries to figure her out.

Without giving away spoilers for the end of episode two, we’ll just say that the two families are connected in many ways, and all roads lead to so much angst. I think having the image of their hot and steamy encounter will help us get through some of the drama to come. Then they’ll fall for each other and have to fight the world to be together. At least that’s what I hope. With this being the Misty writer, they could also burn in a fiery end by the finale.

Final Thoughts

This is a high fashion show full of powerful and beautiful people. Our leads look good in EVERY shot and will continue to, even when the bawling begins. These two have lots of sparks flying, but it’s possible that those sparks won’t sustain us to the end. I’m willing to see what happens no matter what, since I’ve been in the mood for a more adult relationship and this show delivers. I’m not exactly talking about sexy times either. I need a break from the sugary sweet romances. I like a good carnival ride or shooting match date as much as the next drama watcher, but sometimes I want a wine and steak dinner with a classy dessert to follow.

P.S. Sehun fans, I don’t think he was in the first two episodes, but it’s very possible I just missed him. It does say he works at The One, the company Ha Young Eun works at, and I’m sure we’ll get lots of him moving forward.

Until the next photoshoot,
