Kmuse’s Book Reviews (June 7, 2022)

It is time for another batch of books to help everyone get through the week. Come check out this week’s batch that has three strong female protagonists who show the world that they are here to dominate.

Perfect for the reader who wants a tiny bit of magic in their reads.

For the Throne by Hannah Whitten

For The Throne is the second book in this series, and I loved it even more than For The Wolf. In this book, the world-building that was so detailed became even better. Neve and Solmir are unique OTP (one true pairing) who are perfectly matched by their faults. Watching them overcome their guilt and one-minded focus to find love with each other had me interested from start to finish. I love how intricate the character growth is for all the characters involved and highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy worlds with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. If you have not already checked out the first in the series, then be sure to read that first. You won’t be disappointed.

A book that is the start of an exciting new series

A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong

In this series debut from New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong, a modern-day homicide detective finds herself in Victorian Scotland—in an unfamiliar body—with a killer on the loose.

I read some of Kelly Armstrong’s books a few years ago and enjoyed them. However, A Rip Through Time is on a whole other level of enjoyment. Mallory is both resourceful and all-around brilliant when it comes to solving crime. Not only is she able to hunt down the killer, but she can also do it while being in the body of an 18th-century maid. I won’t go into great detail since I don’t want to spoil anything, but this was the epic female sleuth novel that I didn’t know I needed. I can not wait for the next book in the series, and I highly recommend giving this book a try.

The book I can’t stop recommending!

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

I know that we did a group spoiler-free review earlier this year (read it HERE), but in case anyone didn’t read that post I wanted to share it again. Iron Widow is the perfect blend of historic Chinese culture and a fantasy machine-ruled world. The mixing of the two concepts created some great world-building that is both familiar, as well as futuristic. Of course, with the classic Chinese culture, you have a male-dominated society in which men are in charge and women are there to support them and be expendable as needed. Throughout the book, the author challenges these misogynistic ideas of gender and how limited a woman can be without a male to guide her. This book is a great start for those wanting to read new Asian-themed novels and writers.
