Upcoming Dramas August 2019

Where did the month go? It seems like just yesterday that I was typing up the review of July dramas and here we are ready for August. Oh well, dramas wait for no man, or drama addict, so it is time to see what is in store for us this month.

Welcome 2 Life (August 5th)

Synopsis: “Welcome 2 Life” is a fantasy drama that will tell the story about a selfish lawyer who helps people who want to take advantage of the law. One day he gets sucked into a parallel universe due to an unfortunate accident and begins to live a completely new life as an upright prosecutor. (MyDramaList)

Thoughts:

Kmuse: This got bumped back a week due to sporting events so it is being covered again in our August lineup. I loved a similar drama the writer did titled Falling for Innocence starring Jung Kyung Ho. So because of that and the likability of Rain I am planning to give this a try.

Karie the Maknae: I’m undecided on this one too. I haven’t watched Rain in a drama yet, so that’s not a deciding factor for me.

Kdrama Jen: I have not been impressed with Rain’s ability to choose great dramas. I am willing to try this, though.

Clkytta: I’m out. Why are all these dramas all doctors or lawyers. Yuck. (KMUSE: I think it will be focusing more on the fantasy aspect which hopefully helps soften the lawyer part)

MiataMama: Lawyer drama? Ugh. Rain? Yes. Parallel universe? Hmmm . . . This pushes me into “I will try” territory.

Drama Geek: It’s fantasy so I will give it a try.

Let Me Hear Your Song (August 6th)

Synopsis: A murder takes place. Hong Yi Young, who is a timpanist, does not remember what happened on the day of the murder. She is simple-minded and suffers from insomnia. Hong Yi Young looks for a job. She happens to meet Jang Yoon. He is bad at singing but is a pianist in an orchestra. To help with Hong Yi Young’s insomnia, Jang Yoon calls her every night. They try to find the truth about the murder. (MyDramaList)

Thoughts

Kmuse: Did someone say Yeon Woo Jin? I am willing to give this 4 episodes to woo me into a full drama watch. And I’m crossing my fingers that it is good since I have loved YWJ from all the way back to his Ojakgyo Brothers days.

Karie the Maknae: Just going by the synopsis, I’d have to say that this is a very confused drama — is it a romance or a mystery or about music? I’m going to wait to see what Kmuse says after she watches her four episodes.

MiataMama: Ditto everything the Maknae said about the synopsis. Yet, for some unknown reason, I’m compelled to try this one out?!

Clkytta: I’ll try it out. I’m with Kmuse on this one. Yeon Woo Jin is worth at least 4 episodes.

Drama Geek: The teaser makes it feel like it’ll be a straight up rom-com and the murder mystery will be very light. I’m not that familiar with the female lead, but it does have both Yeon Woo Jin and Song Jae Rim so I’ll check out the first episode or so and see how it goes.

Everything and Nothing (August 5th)

Synopsis: The story follows the pain and growth of 17-year-old Min Jae and Seo Yeon. Min Jae is an ordinary, male high school student. He doesn’t talk much and he has a bit of a sensitive personality. Min Jae gets good grades and doesn’t cause trouble.
Seo Yeon attends the same high school as Min Jae. They also graduated from the same middle school. She is an ordinary, female high school student. Two years ago, her parents divorced. Since then, she has lived with her mother.

Thoughts

Kmuse: I might have to give this a chance for Yoon Chan Young and Park Shi Eun. Both have been the younger version in many of my favorite dramas and I am thrilled to see them jumping to leading roles. There is just something so satisfying about seeing a child actor transition into leading lady/man. My only disappointment is that it is only 4 episodes long.

Karie the Maknae: I like these two actors too, so I’ll give this one a shot. Besides, how can you beat that episode count??

MiataMama: I’m not really feeling a serious-type school drama right now. But, Amber makes a good point about about the leads. And only 4 eps?? Okay, I’m a solid maybe.

Clkytta: Hmm. Only four episodes? Yeah, I’ll check it out.

Kdrama Jen: Yoon Chan Young has always impressed me as a young actor. I remember him from Monstar, Six Flying Dragons, and most recently, Still 17. Park Shi Eun was awesome in Crowned Clown and Still 17. I am looking forward to seeing these two young actors reunited!

Drama Geek: Ditto on everything everyone said. LOL. As long as we get it subbed, I’ll watch it.

Be Melodramatic (August 9th)

Synopsis: Im Jin Joo, Lee Eun Jung, and Hwang Han Joo are best friends who are 30-years-old. (MyDramaList)

Thoughts:

Kmuse: Yet another drama that got bumped from July to August. At least now we have teasers and my interest is a lot higher then it was this time last month. I’ll check it out since I need some great sismance to replace Search WWW.

Karie the Maknae: I really liked Age of Youth, so if I hear good things about this one, I’ll put it on my list.

Kdrama Jen: With such a compelling plot, how can I turn away? Seriously. I will wait to decide until I know what it is about!

Clkytta: I’m intrigued. The cast alone has me wanting to at least check out the first episode. Plus I think I signed up to do the first impressions on this one.

MiataMama: Pass. While I enjoyed Age of Youth, girlfriend-type dramas aren’t my favorite.

Drama Geek: While this doesn’t have much to go on, I am always in for a good sismance so I will keep it on my radar. The teaser has made me even more interested.

Graceful Family (August 22nd)

Synopsis: Mo Seok Hee is an only child and her father runs the large company MC Group. She is beautiful, smart and rich. Mo Seok Hee appears like she is arrogant, but she struggles over her mother’s death. Her mother was killed 15 years ago. (MyDramaList)

Thoughts

Kmuse: Not feeling this one at all. Going to pass unless all my social media fans start going crazy about the story.

Karie the Maknae: I SPY A WHITE TRUCK OF DOOM! Same as Kmuse — not feeling it. I’m really done with rich people and their problems right now.

MiataMama: Pass. Doesn’t sound remotely engaging to this fangirl.

Clkytta: I’m going to pass on this one also.

Kdrama Jen: How can I pass this up when everyone else seems set against it? Maybe it is an unpolished gem waiting to be discovered! I am in—at least for the first 4 episodes. Someone has to write the first impressions post!

Drama Geek: I will let Kdrama Jen watch and then I’ll read her first impression to decide. Ha!

Love Alarm (August 22nd)

Synopsis: A love triangle between a hardworking girl and two boys who like her is complicated by the release of a phone app that notifies you every time a person who likes you is within 10 meters (MyDramaList)

Thoughts

Kmuse: Uhm… I have a feeling that the second hand embarrassment is going to be strong in this drama. Will be checking it out because of my girl crush on Kim So Hyun.

Karie the Maknae: This could go either way. I was really burned by Radio Romance, so I’m not on the Kim So Hyun train, but at least this role looks more age-appropriate for her.

MiataMama: I will likely give this one a try, because I like fluffy dramas. And since it’s based on a webtoon, I don’t think this one is going to make me think too much!

Clkytta: I’m not sure about this one. I’ll let my fellow fangirls watch and see if I need to play catch up.

Kdrama Jen: I always give Kim So Hyun at least four episodes. The plot is kind of intriguing too.

Drama Geek: I find the plot on this one very intriguing, and I love Kim So Hyun so I’m planning on checking it out.

Catch Yoo Ryung/Catch the Ghost (August 26th)

Synopsis: Catch Yoo Ryung is a romantic investigative drama about a woman named Yoo Ryung who solves cases with her overflowing sense of justice and exceptional spatial perception but always gets herself into trouble because of her rash actions. She meets the Wangsimni station constabulary chief, a man who avoids cases and seeks stability. However, he always ends up cleaning up after the problems caused by Yoo Ryung and holds the key to the solving the cases. (MyDramaList)

Thoughts

Kmuse: I think I am one of the few people in the world, or at least on social media, that isn’t a Moon Geun Young fan. I have tried to enjoy her since everyone says that I should. However, after watching a bunch of Moon Geun Young’s dramas I have come to the conclusion that for whatever reason, I just don’t enjoy her acting style. This drama is a pass for me.

Karie the Maknae: I know nothing about the actors, but this sounds like the meticulous guy cleaning up after the messy girl trope, which is not one of my favorites. Pass.

MiataMama: Kim Sun Ho – yeay! Since he’s one of my biases, I will definitely be giving this one a try. Even if the storyline sounds a bit on the dull side.

Clkytta: I think I’m going to let this one pass on by. I’m not a fan of either of the leads. I don’t dislike them, but my time is about to become very precious since school is starting back soon.

Kdrama Jen: I am fascinated by the idea that enhanced spatial perception is being used as a plot device. I might check it out just for that!

Drama Geek: Hmm… I’ll wait to see if this one blows up online.

Strangers From Hell (August 31st)

Synopsis: Yoon Jong Woo is a man in his 20’s. He has lived in a small town for all of his life, but he gets a job at a small office in Seoul. Yoon Jong Woo moves out to Seoul and stays at a cheap apartment which shares its kitchen and bathroom with other residents. He doesn’t like staying at the apartment and he doesn’t like the other residents who seem weird and suspicious. (MyDramaList)

Thoughts

Kmuse: This is probably the drama I am most anticipating this month. They had me at Im Siwan!

Karie the Maknae: I’ve seen an alternate translation for this title — Hell is Other People — and it made it seem more like a comedy than a dark drama. I’m a little confused but willing to give it a try!

MiataMama: This is an OCN drama. It’s going to be dark and creepy. Nope! Even knowing Lee Dong Wook is also starring, is not enough to tempt me to try.

Clkytta: I’ll probably check this one out simply for the cast.

Kdrama Jen: Siwan is back on the small screen? I am in!

Drama Geek: It’s the perfect kind of creepy for me and I really want to see Im Siwan in something so I’m checking this one out for sure.

  1. After seeing the teaser, I am willing to check out Love Alarm. Looks promising to me. The fall colors also gave it an added boost.

Hell is Other People is my preferred title. It’s from OCN. It’sdark. And it has Im SiWan. I don’t have to ask for anything more

    • I love the Hell is Other People title too — I’m married to an introvert and this is EXACTLY how he describes parties and other gatherings/crowds of people. I think I’m also leaning towards trying it because of him.
