From rookie groups to seasoned veterans — plus one MV cameo that made me very, very happy — this new year is already starting off with a bang! Come see what MVs caught my attention this week!
ATEEZ – “MATZ”
This amazing duet with Hongjoong and Seonghwa has a haunting opening hook, and I love, love, LOVE how Seonghwa’s tone has developed, and the intriguing charisma they both bring to the MV. This whole song was a highlight on their latest album, and you can feel how much they enjoyed making it. (Ok, the old person in me thinks their grills are a bit much, but that sentiment has strong “get off my lawn” energy, so I’m just gonna leave it here in parentheses.)
Siyeon (Dreamcatcher) – 시작 (“Start Over” cover)
I’m a sucker for a well-executed cover, and this is IT. Add in Nam Da Reum and I can’t take my eyes off the screen. Hurray for the end of his military service, and WOW does that impact the meaning of the lyrics. Siyeon’s voice is just powerful enough to carry this off, and I’ll happily watch this MV over and over again.
DPR IAN – “Limbo”
Any MV that starts with an Edgar Allan Poe quote is going to be intense, no matter how mild the quote, and “Limbo” is no exception. The dreamy, haunting vocals fit the vibe and channel the best of the emo genre – emo in kpop? Yes please!
RIIZE – “Love 119”
Isn’t debut group energy so adorable? It always feels fresh and sweet, and I can’t get enough of it. Riize’s “Love 119” does that, radiating the awkwardness of high school love and the deep feelings behind it.
Bae Jin Ryeol – “Once Again” (with Choi Haedn)
This dreamy ballad is soulful and wistful at the same time, which makes it entrancing. Choi Haedn’s voice is lovely and so, so solid – she never slides into breathiness and I appreciate it. Give it a listen and let it wash right over you. You’ll be glad you did.
