Trailer Pros and Cons: Madame Antoine

ad1Madame Antoine continues to work its way into my upcoming drama lineup with cute trailers focusing on quirky hijinks.  You know I am a sucker for quirky hijinks.  But is the show as light as it seems?  Let’s take a minute and discuss its pros and cons.

** SYNOPSIS:

Ko Hye Rim is a famous fortune-teller. She is known as “Madame Antoine” and insists that she is spiritually connected to Marie Antoinette, but that part is a lie. She can see through people and read their minds using “cold reading” as a technique (a set of techniques used by mentalists, psychics, fortune-tellers, mediums and illusionists to imply that the reader knows much more about the person than the reader actually does). She dreams of having love in a romantic film. Hye Rim then takes part in a psychological test project conducted by psychotherapist Choi Soo Hyun . His goal is to prove that true love does not exist.

 PROS

KMUSE: Sung Joon is definitely a positive for me.  I always want to love his dramas and although there have been a few that were “meh”, I am always ready to check out the next one.

CLKYTTA: The first drama I saw Sung Joon in was I Need Romance 3, and he will always be Sweet Potato to me.  I was not impressed with his last drama, but I think it was more to do with the writing than him.  I really want him to shine in this.

KMUSE:  Also the contract romance aspect sounds like a lot of fun.  It is one of my favorite drama tropes.

CLKYTTA: It’s also one of my favorite drama tropes.  Guy and girl form a relationship for a purpose besides romance, hijinks ensue and they see each other in a totally different light. Suddenly no one wants to admit they are in love because that changes everything.  I can already see Sung Joon muttering to himself how impractical all of it is and that it doesn’t make sense.

CONS

w2.2.pngKMUSE: It has been a while since  Han Ye Seul has done anything that has felt fresh.  It seems that she does the same character style over and over.  Which is OK, until the character falls into a mess of  neurotic antics (looking at you Birth of A Beauty). A few of her scenes in the trailer already felt like Birth of A Beauty with a different name.  I am hoping I am wrong, but that has been my concern from the first time I heard of this casting.

CLKYTTA: I’m pretty meh about Han Ye Seul’s acting.  She’s beautiful, absolutely beautiful, but her acting isn’t memorable to me.  I started Birth of a Beauty, and couldn’t get into it at all.

I’m also concerned about the whole psychic aspect.  I can see the writers getting bogged down midway through the drama.  It’s a delicate line between funny/interesting and over the top cheesiness that makes you cringe.
