One of the things that keeps me listening to all the kpop artists out there is the wide range of beautiful voices. Yes, some groups use autotune like another instrument — and I really don’t mind it — but I also love these artists who let their voices shine.
Heize – “Happen”
This sweet indie bop is perfect for beachside reading or listening to on the way to the art gallery or something like that. Featuring Song Joong Ki, the MV is a work of contemporary pop art and Heize’s voice is perfect for the artsy vibe.
Taewoo – “Pause”
For his unique voice alone, Taewoo’s ballad has ended up on my playlists. His light baritone is gritty and feels very real.
Yuqi – “Giant” and “Bonnie & Clyde”
(G)I-DLE’s Yuqi’s grounded alto is a pleasure to listen to, and a perfect fit for the rock anthem “Giant” and the pop ballad that is “Bonnie & Clyde.”
Armaan Malik, Eric Nam with KSHMR – “Echo”
I cannot even BEGIN to explain why Eric Nam and Armaan Malik’s voices blend so perfectly in this brilliant multicultural collaboration, but they do. With the magic of producer KSHMR’s touch, “Echo” has become my summer earworm.
TXT – “0x1=LOVESONG”
Speaking of blending, doesn’t it feel like TXT has finally found their sound in “0x1=LOVESONG”? I’m loving how natural they sound, and the duet with Seori is light and beautiful.
Monsta X – “Gambler”
“Gambler” is SO on brand for Monsta X. I’m loving their deep voices, especially on the rap, and the luxurious feel of the MV.
B.I – “illa illa”
In my ongoing quest to build the ultimate “Rappers Who Sing” playlist (still a work in progress), I was so very happy to add B.I’s “illa illa.” It’s lovely and dripping with emotion in B.I’s smooth voice.
MAMAMOO – “Where Are We Now”
The voices of Mamamoo are SO perfect for this soaring, anthemic ballad to dying love. It’s mature and deep and beautiful and I would expect nothing less from these ladies.
N.Flying – “Moonshot”
Yoo Hwe Seung’s voice is one of my absolutely favorites in all of kpop (shhhhhhh! Don’t tell the others!). His distinctive vocals pulled me in as soon as I heard them, and I love how he handles the high notes. His voice is its own work of art. Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire Man on the Moon album. Trust me, you’re gonna love it.
EXO – “Don’t Fight the Feeling”
Nothing makes me quite so happy as hearing D.O.’s voice blending with the boys of EXO. He and Baekhyun are some of my favorite EXO idols to listen to, and I’m glad D.O. is back to fill the void while Baekhyun is off in the military.
BONUS TRACK: RM – “Bicycle”
BTS’ Festa is a blessing to ARMY every year, and this year was freakishly amazing. From the group performance of “Daechwita” that I’ve watched over and over again to RM’s solo “Bicycle,” we have gotten SO MUCH! Enjoy another entry from “Rappers Who Sing” and prepare to swoon.
Which voices are your favorites to listen to, music fans? Drop down in the comments and let meknow!
Until the next rapper’s ballad, I remain —
